Moniteau County Sheriff Tony Wheatley confirmed Thursday, Nov. 5, that the report of a missing man circulating social media this week was located deceased in Tipton.

A news release sent out Wednesday afternoon stated that during the early morning hours that same day officers with the Tipton Police Department and deputies with the Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing person from the state of Kansas.

Also early Wednesday a post to Facebook was made by a family member with concerns for the whereabouts of a 27-year-old man identified as Jeremiah “Jay” Groff last seen in Warrensburg. The post, which was shared locally, said he did not report to work at a jobsite in Rolla on Monday and efforts to make contact with him were to no avail.  It was known that his company gas card was used at a station in Warrensburg Monday morning and later his company pinged his iPad  to a location in Tipton.

The local news release, issued by the Tipton Police Department, said, officers with his department and county deputies located the individual, identified by Wheatley as Groff, deceased.

Wheatley said as a result of the investigation it was determined the death was the result of apparent suicide.

City Marshal Edward Wiecken expressed appreciation for the assistance and cooperation of the Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office.
